LEAD GED INSTRUCTOR, MARIE MORGAN, HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED FOR MORE THAN 17 YEARS.
Walking into the Charleston Adult Education classroom at SC Works begins with a warm welcome. This warmth emanates from Marie Morgan, the Lead GED Instructor, and the team of instructors at the workforce development center SC Works Charleston, which brings employers and job seekers together.
As an educator, Ms. Morgan has been instructing adults for the past 17 years. Her teaching strategies include individualized instruction as well as small group activities. She believes that if given the opportunity, every student can succeed.
“My job is to provide that opportunity and to create an environment that is positive and free of distractions—an educational sanctuary,” said Lead GED Instructor Marie Morgan.
Forty-six percent of current Charleston job openings require a high school diploma or the equivalent. Ms. Morgan prepares students to pass the GED exam. Students who pass the State GED Exam earn a South Carolina High School Equivalency Diploma, which removes one significant barrier to employment and opens the door for students to either qualify for one of the 854 open positions or enter postsecondary education and training.
Passing the GED exam and opening employment or postsecondary education opportunities is what drives most students. Others want to pass simply for the satisfaction of knowing they did it.
One such student, a 63-year-old classroom favorite, was academically prepared to take the GED exam after two years of hard work and determination; she passed on her first attempt.
Ms. Morgan’s mantra, “nothing is impossible with positivity, determination and drive,” is passed on to those she teaches.
All SC Works faculty and staff work together towards the common goal of employment and training where Adult Education is available for everyone at all stages of life.
